#GivingTuesday – Need help with 1 project (Parenting Book)

I am honoured to have had ongoing opportunities to speak across Canada and the US for the last 23 years on topics like mental health, media, sexuality, pornography, dating, men, parenting, and others. Thank you so much to the hundreds of people who have supported us both financially and with prayer over the past 20 years. I could never have dreamed up how far this ministry has come since first starting out.

The favourite parts of my job are researching, creating presentations, and then delivering those presentations in order to challenge people to connect their ancient faith with this modern world. I want to encourage my listeners to “enter the danger” on topics that may be difficult to work through. In these confusing times, we need perspectives and intelligent insights into current matters more than ever.

One of my least favourite things I need to do is fundraising. One of the least liked, shared or commented on posts that I put on social media are about fundraising. The hard part with this is that for a non-profit organization like Worlds Apart, fundraising is necessary for our functioning.  As a small charity, our funds come in from 3 sources

40% – speaking engagement honorariums
40% – tax receiptable donations/fundraising
20% – sales of books, DVD’s, digital downloads

Presently, there is 1 major project that I can use your help with: About a year ago I brought out a brand new talk for Parents called Parenting: Navigating Everything. I have also been writing a book for parents that will cover all aspects of parenting in this modern culture we live in today. While I am finishing the writing of the parent’s book I have an editor presently starting to edit the completed chapters. Once all the editing is complete we head to typesetting and then printing. My goal is to have the book out in mid-2019. To get this done I could really use your support. This is not a normal book. In the end, it will be about 250,000 words and be more of a handbook for Christian Parents on the following topics:

  • Mental Health
  • Sexuality
  • Dating
  • Pornography
  • Family Discipleship
  • Spiritual Disciplines (Practices)
  • Media
  • Engaging Culture
  • Finances
  • Education
    etc

There are also new areas which are larger foundations of parenting:

  • parenting styles
  • communication
  • discipline
  • time and presence

Where we stand presently with this project:

• Research $3000 – $500 needed ($2500 funded)

• Publishing $1000 – funded

• Editing / Typesetting $9000 – needed

• Graphics $1000 – funded

• Printing books $8000 – needed

Fundraising needs – $17,500

This is not an enormous amount of money but for a small charity like ours, it seems pretty overwhelming. Whether you can give a little or a lot thanks for considering this project.

Heading into my 20th year speaking… can you help?

As I head into fall 2017, I am excited to begin my 20th year as a speaker. I am honoured to have had ongoing opportunities to speak across Canada and the US for 2 decades on topics like mental health, media, sexuality, pornography, dating, and men. Thank you so much to the hundreds of people, likely including you reading this now, who have supported us both financially and with prayer over the past 20 years. I could never have dreamed up how far this ministry has come since first starting out. As my wife now tells me, “I was terrible”! However now, I see daily the fruit of mine and others investments when students and parents gain new perspectives and hope from one of my talks.

The favourite parts of my job are researching, creating presentations and then to deliver those presentations in order to challenge people to connect their ancient faith with this modern world. I want to encourage my listeners to “enter the danger” on topics that may be difficult to work through. In these confusing times, we need Christ centered perspectives and intelligent insights into current matters more than ever. The students we are mentoring are looking to us to help them navigate these topics and we all need better equipping.

For this ministry year, I am looking forward to these projects below:

  1. Creation of a App to be used before, during, and after my speaking engagements
  2. Filming the new dating.for.life presentation
  3. Filming the media.faith.culture talk for students and parents
  4. Updating aging technology

I’d like to tell you more about each project in the hopes that one or more of them may interest you specifically and you may be prompted to give.

(1) Brett Ullman Speaking App I have the chance to speak to tens of thousands of students, parents, and leaders each year. One of my struggles is how to engage people attending my talks better both before, during and after my talks. An app will allow me to help people with taking notes during the presentations, live polling and resourcing people in all aspects of my talks. My talks are meant to spur people into deeper, more intentional thinking and providing an app to support the talks will provide more easily accessible information to the audience. This is in keeping with current technology trends in society today.

Total needed for App $5000

(2) Filming new dating.for.life talk. The demand for my talks outweighs my abilities to go in person to every audience. With the talks being filmed, we are able to get these out to people digitally (Vimeo on Demand and on DVD). Our past talks that we have filmed have been bought in countries all over the world which is really exciting as many of those places would not be able to afford to fly me in. I want to reach as many people as possible with true, hope filled conversation. With each DVD/digital download sold, more people are taught and more income is generated to sustain this ministry. To film, edit, print DVD’s, and create a trailer for the dating talk, I need to raise $7,500.

(3) Filming media.faith.culture talk. This is one of my most popular talks that I do challenging people in all aspects of our media choices, faith growth and engaging our culture. It would be amazing to get this talk available to people. Similarly to the dating talk, we need to raise $7,500 for this project. I would love to film this talk in Winter 2018.

Total needed for filming of both talks $15,000

(4) Technology: now this is not an exciting place for fundraising but technology is also something I use daily in my office or when I am speaking. Presently my laptop is almost 6 years old and my desktop is 5 1/2 years old. When I am speaking I need a current, functioning laptop will be able to be used for my presentations without any issues. My data projector is also aging at 8 years old. One of the reasons I am able to keep the attention of students so well is my use of technology to connect with them.

What I need in the technology area

  1. iMac – This is the main computer I use for all aspects of my work when I am not on the road speaking. Cost ~$3,000
  2. MacBook – This is the computer I use for all of my speaking presentations. Cost ~$2,000
  3. Data Projector ~$900

Total needed for technology – $5,900

Total fundraising needs – $25,900

I have to be honest this is an overwhelming amount for a small charity like ours. One thing I have heard from people over the years is that if I ever need help, I just need to ask. So this is me asking.

  1. Can you help? You can make a one-time donation or monthly donations through Canada Helps by clicking here. Some people support at $10 a month while for others they might be able to support at $50, $75 or $100 a month. For others, it is a one-time donation. Every donation helps, please don’t think that what you can contribute does not matter. “For anything great to happen, what is needed is a long obedience in the same direction.” Let’s make something great happen and do this together.
  2. Can the business you work for help? I know many companies offer donations to charities. Some businesses want to do anonymous donations which are always ok. Some companies also do matching donations so if you donated $500 they will match and give another $500. Maybe you’d like to stretch your donation dollars by looking into your workplace giving plans.
  3. Do you know of any foundations that might be able to help? Please send through their information.
  4. Networking: If you cannot donate, would you be willing to send this to someone who might be able to? Would you consider telling your church, Christian or Catholic school and other networks about my talks so that they may look into bringing me in to speak to their group.
  5. Purchasing: You could help by purchasing a talk from our store. There are 4 books and 4 DVDs or digital downloads available. All money from these products goes back into the charity. Click here for the store.

I look forward to continuing to empower and equip students, parents, and leaders in tough conversations with your help. Please consider donating. If you have any questions please send me an email at brett@brettullman.com.

Thanks for your time.

Case for the filming of my new talk dating.for.life: the questions

To whom it may concern,

It was 1996 when I did my first talk at a church in Pickering to a room full of high school students. Talking about music and media and how our faith plays a role in this. 10 years later I found my self speaking 45 times per year while still teaching full time with the Toronto District School Board. I left teaching that year and have been speaking full time with Worlds Apart since then.

In his book Holy Discontent Bill Hybels talks about finding out what your Holy Discontent (those things that continuously bother you) are and to walk into that space. That has been the theme for all of my talks for 19 years. Every few years I would add a talk (Self Harm, dating, men, sex, mental health and most recently pornography.

In the last 3 years I have had the chance to film my talks on Mental Health (The Walking Wounded), my talk on sex for parents (The Sex Talk) and my talk on pornography (The Porn Project).

One of the things I hear nightly from students, parents and leaders is the conversation on dating. Questions like “How should a Christian date in these modern times?” are asked almost nightly to me.

I have an older talk called dating.for.life that I have now put on youtube (see entire presentation below)

It is a look at all aspect of dating. It has been about 8-9 years since I created this presentation and I found myself needing to update that talk. I have a new version of my dating talk called dating.for.life: the questions. It basically goes over 8 main questions:

  1. What is dating?
  2. When should I start dating?
  3. Am I ready to start dating?
  4. How do I start dating?
  5. What are Red Flags in my dating relationships?
  6. How do I find out if they are the “One”?
  7. How do I break up?
  8. What if they are the right person for me?

As a speaker I am able to speak about 150 times a year. I am unable to speak at every church and school in the country. My filmed talks are being used in churches from California to England, from Vancouver to St. Johns. I receive emails from people using the DVD or Digital downloads to help equip people in their churches, camps and families to help people with mental health struggles, conversations on sex and helping equip parents and leaders in this tough conversation on pornography. This is the same I want to do with my new dating.for.life – the questions talk.

To do this project we are looking at raising $8,500

$5500 for filming and editing of the talk. It is the editing of the talk that is so time consuming as we need to incorporate a professionally designed Keynote presentation throughout the filmed talk. It gives people the same experience as if I was speaking live at their church or school. This includes a trailer for promotion.

$1000 – Creating Master copy of DVD, Creation of Graphics for DVD jacket and cover.

$2000 – printing of 1500 DVD’s.  The Talk is also put online on VimeoOnDemand.com

Total funds – $8500

We find as a small non for profit it is hard to raise funds. We are cut out of applying for most grants from foundations as we don’t reach their $250k minimum income. We are not looking at raising funds for day to day operations but raising the funds specifically for this project.

The Case for the.Sex.Talk

It was 1996 in Pickering, Ontario – in a Church room full of high school students – I delivered my first talk ever. I talked about music & media and how our faith plays a role in this. 10 years later I found myself speaking 45 times per year while still teaching full-time with the Toronto District School Board. I left teaching that year and have been speaking full-time with Worlds Apart ever since.

In his book “Holy Discontent”, Bill Hybels talks about how everyone needs to find his/her “Holy Discontent” (those things that continuously bother you) and to walk into that space. That has been the theme for all of my talks for 19 years. Every few years I would add a talk which now has grown into Self Harm, Dating, Men, Sex, Mental Health and most recently Pornography.

Last year we had the chance to film my talk called the “Walking Wounded” which talks about a Christian view towards people struggling with mental health issues. How can we have a Biblical yet utterly practical response to those of us struggling with all forms of mental health?

At this time, I am looking at filming “the.sex.talk”:

Why: Present day statistics show that 70-80% of young Christians adults have had sex before they got married. This means that we need to rethink completely how we engage students in this conversation from a standpoint of parents, youth groups and the greater Christian community. What a tough time to grow up being a teenager. So many questions and so little answers from parents and the Christian Community. We cannot continue to be silent on these issues of sexuality.

How: “the.sex.talk” helps lay the foundation–equips and empowers parents in how to help their kids get a Biblical worldview of healthy Sexuality. I usually say the talk help kids get a Biblical Sexual Ethic. It goes through all of the areas we need to talk about to begin this conversation in our homes. We must break the cycle of failure by addressing head on these conversations.

Goal: The goal of this project is that through this talk it will help create a culture where Christian parents and their teenagers are equipped and empowered to have this conversation–resulting in better and healthier choices in the area of sex for their teenagers.

It was a few years ago that I began to hear from parents about these growing struggles. With society around us growing ever so sexualized how were parents to respond. More recently the Ontario government came out with a new Health Curriculum with a ton of new material on sex. Hundreds of letters flooded in to me asking for help.

“What is a Christian parent to do with the new sex education curriculum?”
Parent in Toronto

I was being asked to come into churches and schools to speak to parents about the new curriculum. I would always push back a bit and say that we as Christians are not against sex education. We must as parents have these tough conversations with our kids. Many parents would say to me that they don’t even know where to start. I have taken the past year to create a talk for Parents I am calling “The Sex Talk: Parents and Leaders”. It is a talk to help empower and equip parents in the areas of helping our kids create a sexual ethic (connect their faith with the area of sex).

“How do I actually teach my kids to have a Biblical view of sex? Where do I start?”
– email from parent of teen –

As a speaker I am able to speak about 100-125 times a year. I am unable to speak at every church and school in the country. My last filmed talk “The Wounding Embrace” is being used in churches from California to England, from Vancouver to St. Johns. I receive emails from people using the DVD or Digital download to help equip people in their churches to help people with mental health struggles. I feel now is the time to film the Sex and the Porn talk.

Ask:  I would like to start by filming the sex talk. We have raised about $7,000 for this project already but need to raise the remaining $6,000.

  • $8,000 – for filming and editing of the talk. It is the editing of the talk that is very time consuming as we need to incorporate a professionally designed Keynote presentation throughout the filmed talk. It gives people the same experience as if I was speaking live at their church or school.
  • $2,500 – Trailer for promotion
  • $1,000 – Creating Master copy of DVD, Creation of Graphics for DVD jacket and cover.
  • $1,500 – printing of 1500 DVD’s. The Talk is also put online on VimeoOnDemand.com
  • Total funds – $13,000

This talk would help parents and students with a framework for how to have a Biblical Worldview in these areas. Due to the growing importance and requests for this talk–I can’t physically deliver it in person to all those who need to hear it but by filming the talkimagine the local, national and international impact it will have on our teens.

It is hard to raise funds for a small non for profit. We are cut out of applying for most grants from foundations as we don’t reach their $250k minimum income. As a charity that has been around for almost 19 years we are not looking at raising funds for day to day operations but raising the funds specifically for this project. I presently speak over 100-125 talks a year that pay for all of the overhead costs of running Worlds Apart (office, equipment, salary etc.)
