A New Narrative: Talking to your teens about technology: Vlog 1 of 5

This is part 1 of a 5 part video blog (vlog) series where we will be looking at trying to change the narrative of how we speak to our teens about technology. We will look at current ways parents talk to teens about tech and then look at a new narrative (new talking points) that teens will respond to better. We need to move from telling to teaching. From telling them what to do to teaching them how to make good decisions in the area of tech.

Parenting Tip: When asked if you can drive anywhere … say yes!

This is a very simple parenting tip: I want you to drive your kids and your kid’s friends places and just listen. It is a very easy way to get a front row seat (literally) to the lives of your kids.
I am not saying we stop having our kids take the bus to school to drive them. I am also not saying they should not walk if they are able to. I am talking about when they ask if they can get a drive to the mall, movies, friends house etc. Say yes.

Finally, Apple Releases Screen Time Controls

I was going to write a blog this week on the new Screen Controls Apple added in their new operating system (iOS12). This morning this article came through from the people at Screenagers and it is fantastic.

The goal of using something like this is to not over-parent, over-control, but to set up systems that help lessen the parent-child conflict. For example, rather than track down your tween to get the phone at, say, 9 pm, the phone can be configured to have all apps go off at 9 pm, including texting.

Adopting any new technology often sends chills down my spine. For those of you who feel the same way, I’ve included step-by-step instructions below on how to set this up. You and your child’s devices both have to be set up for this to work.

Fall 2018 Speaking Schedule: love to see you at one of these dates!

I thought I would post a list of the upcoming speaking dates I have this fall.  I did not include schools to this list as they are not events you might be able to attend.

For these dates, you can do one of 3 things:

  1. Attend with you and your family/friends.
  2. Bring some of the students/parents from your church along. You might want to email the church to confirm there are no costs.
  3. If I am in your region for a talk and you want to add a speaking date for your school, church, or another event please let me know. I often add in a Catholic School or Christian school in the cities I am speaking in.

Please make sure you check on their church/conference websites for more information. The times could change. Thanks

How to help your child/teen during a panic/anxiety attack

I often get emails from parents asking me about how they can help their child when they are having a panic/anxiety attack. In this video, we will look at some definitions, some signs your child might be having a panic/anxiety attack, and some things to do to help during that time.

Love to hear your thoughts on this. What has worked for you? What did not work?
